The Fat Man Cometh

Great news this morning, with the publication of the 2008 Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal. I'm delighted on behalf of Carles Abellan and Head Chef Arnau Muñío to announce that Comerç 24 has been awarded a Michelin star. Accloades were far from why I chose to train here and, to be quite honest, most of us within the team had shrugged off the idea that we would even be considered for a star simply because of our informal and unfussy style of dining.

We're all aware of certain criteria that, up until a few years ago at least, one was obliged to comply with in order to be considered by the publishers of the famous red book. And that's exactly why we're all so chuffed - because it really is a sign of the progression and adaptation of Michelin that we've been commended with a star. I think we all know deep down that this award is very well-deserved, and I'm thrilled to be a tiny little part of what's going on here.
Comerç 24 is awarded its first Michelin star
We'd actually first got wind of the award through the grapevine on Tuesday morning and the news was soon confirmed when a cameraman showed up before lunch service to take photos around the kitchen and, more importantly, shots of Carles posing with his gold star. The whole team went out for a celebratory drink after service that night. You couldn't wipe the smiles from our mouths if you tried.

Postscript: With full details now published, it doesn't look very good for Spanish gastronomy overall. While Japan and the US have done well in this year's Michelin gradings, Spain has failed to achieve a single new 3* restaurant and only Abac here in Barcelona managed to join the existing nine 2* eateries.

Congrats, Trig! I'm sure it must be exciting for all of you, and it can't hurt that you can now put a Michelin starred restaurant on your resume. :) Give my regards to your head chef and other colleagues, I'm sure the accolades are well-deserved.

Thanks Becke and you are dead right, it won't hurt the cv at all. But when I looked at the intricate food I'm preparing and the Thanksgiving meal photos posted by bloggers like you, I was hit by a strong desire to come home for a family Christmas feast. Watch this space!
