Last night, Channel 4 presented Jamie's Return To School Dinners, a follow-up to Jamie Oliver's ground-breaking TV series of last year, in which we see Jamie back at some of the schools from the original programmes. He had hoped to find that the dramatic changes for which he fought so hard and long were still in place across the country, but it seems that not everyone has been totally enthusiastic towards the revolution in school meals.
Some parents, including two now notorious mothers from Sheffield, didn't agree with Jamie's campaign to get better quality food provided to our school children. In fact they were so appalled by the government's new changes limiting freedom of choice and forcing their kids to eat healthily, that they decided to start supplying junk food to their children through the school fence. Amongst other parents, they can also seen protesting in the street with anti-Oliver placards. They portray Jamie as some kind of monster, who wants to take away the childrens' beloved salty snacks and sugar-filled sweets and stuff their gobs with broccoli.
I think the reaction by these parents is totally outrageous. Oliver may have a bit of a potty mouth, but he has done nothing but good for kids in this country and his campaign has highlighted and brought about well-needed changes. At the end of the day, the only question we should be asking ourselves is: Are our schools better off this way or not? And the answer, without any shadow of doubt, is: Yes!
Good news: The protesting parents have called off their campaign tonight after hostile comments in much of the press and discussions with the school.
